Using different techniques ranging from sculpture to video to installation, Fernando Sánchez Castillo’s exploration addresses the significance of the monument in contemporary culture. In particular, the Spanish artist focuses on today’s change in value of the monument, dominated by an enormous amount of mass media information. For the exhibition, the artist presents the video Rich Cat Dies of Heart Attack in Chicago, in which various attempts to destroy a bronze sculptureexpress the desire to cancel a symbol of power. The work of Sánchez Castillo often employs the absurd and irony to demystify the ideologicaluse of power and especially the values which it takes on. In a series of works, entitled Barricades, the artist builds barricades using various objects, transforming the symbol of protest into something different and challenging through the use of bronze, the material with which normally monuments, an expression of power, are built.
