The American boom of the ’50s form the backdrop to the story of Frank (Dennis Quaid) and Cathy Whitaker (Julianne Moore), two seemingly happy middle-class Americans. This charming and elegant vintage framework hides, however, under a veneer of serenity, secrets and unresolved issues about sex and race. A detailed portrait of a decade, a symbol of social and political mirage that never really gained consistency. Volpi Cup awarded to Moore at the Venice Film Festival in 2002.
