In Berlin in the eighties, two angels Damiel and Cassiel roam the city listening to the happy or sad thoughts of the people they encounter: a pregnant woman, a painter, a man thinking about his ex-girlfriend. Damiel, in addition to a great empathy for the anxieties and joys of the humans, feels a strong attraction toward the city, still disfigured by the enormous scars of the Second World War. One day he sees Marion, a beautiful trapeze artist fired from the circus where she works, and he falls in love. From his unobtrusive presence he will take notice of an actor, a former angel, who has given up his true nature.
