Winner of the Silver Lion for Best Director at the Venice Film Festival in 2007, Brian De Palma’s film “Redacted” (a word that means “regulated”, “examined” by a censor), is an ingenious, uncomfortable and difficult work, in which the director takes up the American war in Iraq not from the objective perspective of the camera, but by making the “images” speak directly. The rape and murder of a fifteen-year-old girl by several U.S. soldiers is thus documented through the most disparate sources: the reportage of a fellow American soldier, the fictitious film of a French troupe, the local news, the chat conversations of the soldiers with relatives, video uploaded to YouTube by ordinary people and more.
