For several years photographer Denis Darzacq has been working with young street dancers. In his series Hyper he juxtaposes the vital movement of these young dancers with the repetitive environment and endless product shelves of suburban supermarkets. Even though one may be tempted to assume that these pictures have been digitally manipulated, this is not the case. Darzacq captures the movements of the dancers in such a way that they really seem to be levitating in the air. Their ability to overcome the force of gravity is real, whereas the supermarket spaces, in which they are floating freely, seem artificial. Are these youngsters loosing ground? Is it a generation in free fall? We do not know. They seem to be carried away by some longing for liberation, for freedom beyond the standardized world of consumption. Darzacq leaves his work open to interpretation.
