Pablo Helguera wrote a book with the programmatic title Manual of Contemporary Art Style in which he condensed his research on the role that art plays in society to a number of simple rules of behaviour. The unexpected way in which he confronts the reader with the trivial truth behind certain myths on how meaning, value and money are created in the art world is both amusing and disillusioning. In his humorous distance and conceptual approach to the mechanisms of the art system he seems to follow Marcel Duchamp who questioned not only the privileged status of art within our society but also criticized the principles of merit governing the art world. But in a second step Helguera reconnects himself with the art system transforming his insights into a series of classically designed art objects.
