Workshop / Role playing

Il gioco dei ruoli

The works and themes of the current exhibitions become the material with which to build dialogue-based visits and laboratory activities for schools. The young participants are asked to express their own point of view in a continuous dialogue with the artists’ works, the teachers and the mediators of the CCC Strozzina.

Role-playing (workshop + visit to the exhibition)

This workshop has been devised to prompt participating students to reflect creatively on the theme of the exhibition: the family and its members’ different roles.

We tend to think of the family as something inflexbile in which each member is assigned a set role with which they have to comply. But if we stop to think for a moment, we realise that if we change our standpoint, a mother, for example, can be a daughter, a niece and a sister at the same time. And the situation is further complicated by the family roles spawned by special friendships. For instance, how often have we had to call our parents’ closest friends “uncle” or “aunty”? Roles are defined by bonds with other members of the family but also by each member’s tasks, responsibilities and rights. Certain situations give us clues to these roles, such as who sits where at table or who takes charge of the TV remote.

In the first part of the workshop, participating students have to produce an ideal family portrait in the shape of a collage, using the silhouettes of a number of characters they are given. The characters, taken from works of art on display in the exhibition, are placed in settings designed to suggest new roles and bonds.

In the second part of the workshop, structured to resemble a guided tour of the Family Matters exhibition, the students encounter the characters that they have used in their collage in the works on display, reflecting together on the way the artists have depicted the roles and bonds of the figures in their portraits.

The aim of the workshop is:

-       to familiarise with creativity in the shape of a collage, to reflect on portrayal as a vehicle for ideas;

-       to reflect on the definition of roles in the family;

-       to stimulate students’ ability to observe and interpret an image through interaction with contemporary works of art.

Duration: 2 hours, € 5.00 per student (ticket to the exhibition included).
