Language through the arts
workshops

Activities appropriate for diverse academic disciplines focused on expanding a student’s Italian language vocabulary in an informal learning environment. Taking place in the galleries, students will learn new Italian words and phrases surrounding the discussion of contemporary art and culture. The professor will establish the level of difficulty for the workshop based on their class’s proficiency of the language.

Workshop includes a brief presentation to the exhibition’s topic, followed by an activity where each participant receives a selection of Italian words that pertain to an artwork or exhibition theme. The words function as motivators to describe and create connections between artworks on view. With the help of the mediator, each student will briefly explain the meaning and use of each word to the class. Professors will have access to the list of relevant terms prior to the visit to help prepare students for the activity.

Workshop plus takes place over two visits. The first visit follows the outline of Workshop 1, introducing students to new Italian words and the practice of using them in the context of a gallery visit. During the second visit, students will choose a work of art and prepare a brief presentation in Italian for the class. This second visit will motivate students to use new words in a relevant context and offer them the opportunity to practice Italian outside the classroom.

Purpose:

  • Introduce and practice Italian words in relation to the context of contemporary works of art and culture
  • Actively involve students both linguistically and culturally through encouraging visual analysis and explications of contemporary art
  • Place students learning Italian in the position of having to express themselves in a constructive environment outside the formalities of the classroom
  • Direct students toward careful observation of the exhibition by having them explain aspects of a work of art that they may have otherwise missed
