LECTURE / Roberta Valtorta
Place and Identity in Contemporary Italian Photography
Italian contemporary photographers have depicted the Italian landscape countless times, contributing through their work to the construction of an idea and an image of the territory that represents and gives shape to an existential condition of the society of our time. From the gazes of these photographers are indebted those authors who have recounted the Italy of recent years, and the architects who have designed it. Authors such as Guido Guidi, Gabriele Basilico, Mimmo Jodice and others who have followed them have often steered clear of the stereotyping images of Italy that flood the global imagination toward more intimate evocations that are just as powerful. During the lecture Roberta Valtorta will analyze the relationship created between the Italian territory and photography to understand how the latter has become the interpreter of a place and its inhabitants.
Roberta Valtorta is a historian of photography, member of the SISF, Scientific Director of the Museo di Fotografia Contemporanea of Cinisello Balsamo–Milan, and professor of the history and theory of photography at the Centro Bauer ex Umanitaria of Milan. Among her recent publications is the monograph dedicated to Mimmo Jodice (2013, Addison). For the Einaudi publishing house, she edited the volume Luogo e identità nella fotografia italiana contemporanea (2013) that has inspired the lecture’s theme. She has also edited, among others, Joachim Schmidt e le fotografie degli altri (Johan e Levi, 2012) and Il pensiero dei fotografi. Un percorso nella storia della fotografia dalle origini a oggi (2008, Bruno Mondadori).
