The events that recently upset Tunisia and Egypt and are now spreading throughout the Middle East and North Africa region which leads us to reconsider the role of the network in the process of global democratization. Dividing her time between Italy and the Middle East, Donatella Della Ratta faces the issue of free communication in countries where freedom of expression and the press are severely restricted and the transmission of information through the network is the only opportunity that remains outside the control of the regimes.

Donatella Della Ratta is a consultant and researcher. An expert in communication and new media, she has focused on Al Jazeera and in 2005 published, Al Jazeera: Arab Media and Society in the New Millennium. Ratta collaborates with the Creative Commons network and manages the blog mediaoriente.
