The artist Franco Menicagli has created an installation in the centre of Palazzo Strozzi, achieving a radical transformation of the perception of this Renaissance space. Dozens of ceramic tiles have been re-purposed to create three columns which serve as the foundation for Menicagli’s unique aerial composition constructed entirely from supple wood laths and plastic packing ties. The tiles, typically used for decorating interior spaces, are transformed here in precarious elements, juxtaposed with the architecture of the Palazzo’s courtyard. The wood laths acquire a linear and lyric power generated by the fluid and unpredictable forms they assume through pure structural tension. The plastic ties are left visible, much as they are seen in every-day use, serving here as the essential connective tissue between the installation’s elements.
Menicagli creates a reciprocal relationship with the palazzo’s architecture, a connection between two seemingly opposed worlds which are united by a human need to build, to reach upwards, to look to the skies.
