| The canvas shows a surreal scene charged with mystery: normal animals are portrayed in unusual attitudes and poses in a dark landscape. The meaning of this scene is not immediately clear and it is open to the different interpretations that each spectator can provide. This, because the Black Brain project is rooted in the impossibility of defining a single unambiguous meaning for anything. Even the work of art's physical status is the object of a process that causes it to change in time rather than to have a stable connotation. The picture undergoes structural changes which alter its aspect in the various exhibition centres that host it thanks to changes in its frame. Paolo Chiasera tackles a traditional genre like painting by questioning the value in merely depicting reality, underscoring instead its nature as the translation of obscure and evocative form and content into a new vocabulary. |
